Barbel Fishing Locations
Barbel are mostly found on rivers with fast flowing water, although they can be found in slower rivers as well as some lakes. Barbel need waters with lots of oxygen as well as an abundant source of food. They also prefer waters with gravel beds and deep holes and troughs.
Below are a list of several different water types which barbel can be caught in. If you feel we have missed something out, please let us know via our contact page.
Rivers
If you're looking to catch barbel your best bet is to visit a river. Barbel need fast flowing waters as well as a very high oxygen concentration, and a river is the perfect place. The powerful river currents help barbel grow big and strong, so you can bet you're in for one hell of a fight!
One of the best methods when river fishing for barbel is to use a ledger to place your bait on the bottom, as well as hold it in the current. A quivertip rod raised high in the air is one of the best setups for indication, and is suited well to pretty much all seasons and weather conditions. Whilst there are lots of baits available, some of the most popular barbel river baits are pellets, luncheon meat, maggots, and bollies.
Lakes
Fishing on lakes for barbel is not really recommended, and is not really a popular choice. Barbel need the strong river currents and high oxygen content that lakes and ponds lack, so if you really want to catch barbel avoid lakes altogether. However if you do find a lake that contains barbel and you fancy catching them, the same methods and baits as river fishing should do the job.
