Barbel Information

Barbel, also known as Barbus Barbus, is a species of freshwater fish belonging to the carp family. They are easily recognisable by the large barbels either side of their large carp like mouths. They can be found throughout Europe and Asia, and are an extremely popular part of course fishing. Anglers enjoy catching them due to their incredible strength and power.

Below we have listed several different areas of barbel information, ranging from feeding habits to likes and dislikes.

Barbel Weight and Size

Barbel can grow fairly large depending on their diets and habitat. They can grow to over 21 lb (9.5 kg) in weight, and over 4 feet (1.2 metres) in length. However on average barbel grow to around 6 lb (2.7 kg) in weight, and around 2 feet (0.6 metres) in length.

Barbel Feeding Habits

Barbel generally feed on the bottom of rivers in deep areas with a gravel or rocky bottom. They feed on organisims such as insect larve and crustaceans, although they will feed on a variety of other food sources if they discover them. Barbel are also very good at finding food due to their large barbels, which they use to seek out their next meal.

Barbel Habitats

The majority of barbel live in fast flowing rivers, which is one of the reasons they are so powerful. They are also stocked in some lakes, although this is normally frowned upon as barbel need a fast flowing current to grow and mature properly. Their natural habitats contain lots of oxygen and varying terrain, such as deep rocky holes and gravel beds.

Barbel Likes and Dislikes

The key thing that barbel like is fast flowing water with lots of oxygen, not to mention a plentiful natural food source. They are also spooked fairly easily so dislike noise and visible disturbances.
